Celebrated Fifth Global Legislators Forum

Tokyo, Japan
June 2008

Tokyo, 28 June 2008. The Global Legislators Organization for a Balanced Environment (GLOBE) in partnership with the COM+ Alliance, organized in Japan the fifth Global Legislators Forum on climate change that links directly to the Gleneagles Dialogue, a process involving 20 countries and initiated by Tony Blair under the UK's G8 presidency in 2005.

The two-day GLOBE Tokyo G8+5 Legislators Forum Japanese included the participation of Prime Minister & President of the G8, Yasuo Fukuda. He was joined by former UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair, and former Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, and over one hundred senior members of parliament from across the G8 and major emerging economies of Brazil, China, India, Mexico & South Africa. As a result, they reached an agreement on a post 2012 Climate Change Framework. An on the job training for journalists organized by the COM+ Alliance one day before the opening.


 

Central American Journalists Forum in Panama

With the purpose of sharing ideas and experiences in the field of communications for sustainable development and discuss how to improve reporting, the Network of Agro-environmental Journalists and Communicators of Panama and Genesis Environmental newspaper, with the collaboration of the COM+ Alliance, organized a forum for Central American Journalists. It took place in Panama June 11-15 with the financial support of several Panamanian organizations and corporations.
 
The forum included a visit to Bocas del Toro Province to get acquainted first-hand with the situation of marine and coastal resources impacted by climate change. The COM+ Alliance Communications Officer gave a presentation of the role of media in promoting sustainable development and the report issued by the International Assessment of Agricultural Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD).
 
15 media outlets participated in the forum, including: Channel 7 from Costa Rica; Diario Hoy from Nicaragua; La Prensa Grafica from El Salvador; Channel 7 from Guatemala; and Channel 13 from Honduras.

 

Costa Rican Journalists Exposed to Sustainable Tourism

San Jose, Costa Rica

A group of 15 Costa Rican journalists from different national and specialized media outlets participated in a special seminar on sustainable tourism that took place in San Jose, Costa Rica, on July 16th.
 
During this activity, organized by COM+ in partnership with Rainforest Alliance and the Ecotourism National Chamber (CANAECO), specialists from Rainforest Alliance’s Sustainable Tourism Division interacted with journalists to discuss the concept and practice of sustainable tourism. As a result of worldwide increasing demand for this type of tourism, the case of “Horizontes Nature Tours”, one of the first Costa Rican tours operators certified was presented.
 
Radio Nacional, Perfil Magazine from Nation Group, Costa Rica Traveler, Viajes Magazine and TV Sur Canal 14 participated, among others.

2008 COM+ Award for Communicating the Food Crisis

In 2008, soaring food prices spread throughout the world, resulting in crisis in many developing countries. This year the COM+ Communication Award will be granted to a campaign related to the food price crisis. Issued by COM+ and thus backed by its members, the award recognizes the role of communications in attaining sustainable development goals. The Award caries a prize value of US$10,000 and will be presented at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Barcelona, Spain, in October 2008.

IUCN prepares for World Conservation Congress

The World Conservation Congress, to be held in Barcelona 5-14 October organized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the governments of Spain and Catalonia, will be the largest and most relevant event devoted to a broad range of environmental and sustainable development issues in 2008. Held every four years, the Congress aims to improve how we manage our natural environment for human, social and economic development. Over 8,000 people from more than 150 countries are expected to attend the Congress, one of the world’s leading events for decision makers from many different sectors.
 

 

Blog on Water Resources Links to Expo Zaragoza 2008

Under the subject of “Water and Sustainable Development”, Expo Zaragoza 2008 is the main world event on water resources and it is taking place from June 14 to September 14 in Spain. During these three months, Expo Zaragoza is getting together scientists, journalists, artists, businessmen and governmental representatives from more than 100 countries. This event aims to facilitate a dialogue among different cultures with the purpose to share ideas and experiences related to water challenges. A special blog to bring Latin American people closer to the event was created by Amanco and Mexichem.
